Weve got to examine our white liberal friends who come to Mississippi and march with us, and can afford to march because our mothers, who are their maids, are taking care of their house and their children; we got to examine them [applause]. Yeah; Im going to speak the truth tonight. Im going to tell you what a white liberal is. You talking about a white college kid joining hands with a black man in the ghetto, that college kid is fighting for the right to wear a beard and smoke pot, and fighting for our lives [cheers and applause]. Herndon launched her successful career in corporate America when she became the first African American exempt professional and external hire in the Communicator Development Program of The Dow Chemical Company.\u00A0 Later, she made significant contributions at other major corporations, including DuPont and Starbucks Coffee Company. \nBorn in LaGrange, Georgia on July 31, 1952, Herndon\u2019s family joined the Great Migration of blacks from the South to the North and moved to Flint, Michigan in 1953.\u00A0 Her father was employed by the General Motors Buick Division and her mother worked at Hurley Hospital. Herndon graduated from Flint Southwestern High School in 1970, and attended Michigan State University, earning both her bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees in Journalism in 1974 and 1979 respectively.\nPrior to joining The Dow Chemical Company, Herndon worked as a legislative assistant in the Michigan House of Representatives from 1975 to 1977. She joined The Dow Chemical Company in 1978 where she held several public affairs and marketing communications positions during her 12-year career. In 1990, she joined DuPont where she held progressively more responsible public relations positions for DuPont over a five-year time frame. \u00A0\nIn 1995, Herndon was recruited by Starbucks and became Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs.\u00A0 At the time, Starbucks only had 550 stores in North America.\u00A0 Herndon became part of the team responsible for expanding the company into international markets outside of North America. During her first year as the company\u2019s chief communications officer, Herndon was instrumental in helping the coffee company open its first store in Tokyo, Japan. \nIn 1996, Herndon was promoted to Senior Vice President of the company\u2019s Global Communications Department. Patrick, Governor of Massachusetts was elected in 2006.\u00A0 He became at that time only the second African American elected as a state Governor in the history of the United States.\u00A0 Patrick was born on July 31, 1956 in Chicago to Laurdine Pat Patrick and Emily Mae Wintersmith, and raised in the Robert Taylor housing project on that city\u2019s \u0026ldquo;South Side.\u0026rdquo;\u00A0 His father\u2019s career as a jazz musician (with the Sun Ra band) often took him away from home. Occasionally, Patrick travelled with his father, especially to New York City, where he often stayed with the family of the African drummer, Babatunde Olatunji and his wife Amy.
