Knowing there would be little resistance to their withdrawal, the group received assistance and the blessing of the larger white churches.\u00A0 Dr. Samuel Stillman, pastor of First Baptist Church, agreed to support the new church with the stipulation that they were to \u0026ldquo;plainly dissuade\u0026rdquo; white admittance. \nAt the time of its founding the church congregation consisted of 24 members, nine men, and 15 women.\u00A0 With $7,150 raised in funds for the new church, they built an edifice at 46 Joy Street on Beacon Hill which was completed in December 1806.\u00A0 That building is now a national historic landmark called the African Meeting House. \nAlthough he started other churches in upstate New York and Haiti, Rev. Paul remained African Baptist\u2019s pastor until he resigned \u0026ldquo;by reason of ill-health\u0026rdquo; in 1829.\u00A0 Other black and white clergymen led the congregation until the Civil War.\u00A0 In 1838, a new pastor from Portland, Maine, Rev. He graduated from Sacramento High School, where he led the state in basketball scoring during his senior year, with a point average of 32.5 points. Johnson then played college basketball at the University of California at Berkeley.\u00A0 While there he became the all-time leader in scoring for that varsity team.\u00A0 After graduating from UC Berkeley in 1987, Johnson was drafted into the National Basketball Association (NBA). \nAs the seventh round draft pick, Johnson was chosen by the Cleveland Cavaliers, but was quickly traded to the Phoenix Suns in 1988, where he remained for the duration of his career in the NBA. Johnson played point guard, and with his high point-scoring, was considered by many teams as a threat. The document claimed that this black church was formed in 1854. Early enslaved members continued to maintain dual membership with the predominantly white Wall Street Baptist Church until after the Civil War. But the establishment of an all-black congregation with its own building in Antebellum Mississippi was particularly distinctive at the time.\nThe church probably derived its name from the 12-acre Rose Hill estate that was destroyed by the Union Army during the Civil War.\u00A0 The former enslaved people in the area adopted the name Rose Hill for the community in its vicinity.\u00A0 By the end of the Civil War, Randle Pollard, a former slave, became the first minister of Rose Hill Baptist Church and on August 8, 1870, the church was incorporated by the Mississippi State Legislature. This recognition signaled the church\u2019s permanent separation from Wall Street Baptist Church. Pollard soon became a member of the board of trustees at Rose Hill. Twenty-three years later in 1893, members of the Rose Hill congregation constructed a newer and more elegant building, demolishing the original 1850s style structure. According to church records, the new building featured a bell tower that was an estimated 60 feet tall.\nIn 1908, trouble arose. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1960, Dixon attended California State University, Los Angeles. He earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in 1962 and entered Southwestern University Law School in Los Angeles, California.\u00A0 He received a J.D. from the institution in 1967.\u00A0 Dixon initially practiced law soon after his graduation but later served as an aide to California State Senator Mervyn Dymally. \nIn 1972, Dixon was elected to the California State Assembly representing West Los Angeles.\u00A0 He was reelected twice and during his last term served as Chair of the Assembly Democratic Caucus.\u00A0 In 1978 he was elected to a seat in the United States House of Representatives. As Democratic representative of California\u2019s 32nd district, which includes much of West Los Angeles, Dixon joined campaigns for education, labor, health care, and environment reforms.\u00A0 A strong supporter of mass transit, he used his influence to allocate federal money to improved public transportation in Greater Los Angeles. \nDixon was a staunch advocate for civil rights. For much of his life he was an active member of the Los Angeles branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the local chapter of the Urban League. As a senior member of the Congressional Black Caucus, he backed legislation that called for the construction of a Martin Luther King Memorial in Washington, D.C. In addition, after the 1992 Los Angeles uprising, Dixon supported legislation that would provide business owners with money to rebuild their establishments. \nWithin the House of Representatives Julian Dixon served on committees concerned with defense, congressional ethics, and federal funding.
